Built in the 1870s by Birmingham landowner Isaac Horton and architect Thomas Plevins, the original hotel was a gas-lit masterpiece of Victorian style and engineering. It gained a reputation as being one of the most spectacular hotels in the country, with the famous Grosvenor Room at its heart.
