Historic Properties: City Centre (Eastgate)
City Centre, Chester. CH1 1LE
Chester is perhaps most famous for its City Walls, which are the most complete circuit of Roman, Saxon, and Medieval walls in the UK and are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Walls were originally built to defend Chester against enemies, but since the 1760s they’ve become a place for relaxing and socialising instead.
Roman legionaries, Anglo-Saxon warriors, Norman knights, medieval bowmen, Civil War cavaliers and Georgian dandies have all walked these Walls. Nearly 2,000 years of Chester’s history lies waiting to be discovered beneath your feet. Along the way you’ll discover Chester’s most interesting and historic places, and enjoy great views of the city, its surroundings, the River Dee and the Clwydian Hills beyond. Walk under the East Gate Clock, the second most photographed clock in the country, stand on the spot where Charles I saw his army defeated, view Chester Cathedral and gaze across the Roodee Racecourse.
Between the Phoenix Tower and the Northgate, may be seen some remains of the original Roman walls. Rising from the Canal, itself constructed along the old moat, they terminate in a cornice six feet below the parapet.
You can also view our City Walls Photograph Gallery for a pictorial journey along the Walls.
