Manchester Metro System
The Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992 and is one of the largest networks in the country. An electrically powered tram system, it was built on the old railway line between Manchester Victoria railway station and Bury Interchange.
The line was extended through the city centre to Altrincham in the south later that year. Extra routes have been added over the years including a line to Manchester Piccadilly railway station, Manchester Airport and more recently to the Trafford Centre. The main hub for the system is Piccadilly Gardens in the city centre, with a second route through the city centre via Exchange Square now open.
