Manchester is a hub for railways in the north west. Direct services operate from here to most parts of the country including London Euston, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Nottingham and Scotland.
Manchester has two main railway stations, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria. Piccadilly is the major station and nearly all national services use this station including those to London Euston. Victoria is the smaller station and services here include extra services to Liverpool and Leeds, and local regional services. Journey time from London Euston to Manchester is two and a quarter hours but is subject to delays and cancellation.
There are many local railway lines in the Greater Manchester area and there are plans to add more stations to the network. There is a regional integrated travel card which can be purchased for unlimited travel on trains and buses in the area all day.
The main points that lets the rail service in the area down are the cost of rail fares and the frequency of rail services during the day to local stations.
