Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one of the old postcards that feature on your site for a TV Programme, book, etc?

Over 95% of the postcards on our website come from our community collection, the other 5% are scans from contributors. Many cards in our postcard collection are over 100 years old.

Copyright is generally acknowledged to be expired (or now rests with the owner of the card) but you should check that this applies to your usage of the image. We don't charge a usage fee as such, but normally charge an administration fee starting at £25 to go towards covering staff time/costs for fulfilling any requirements - this can really mount up with the numerous requests we receive. It might be cheaper for you to buy a similar postcard at a Postcard Fair or online which you can use yourself. We can sometimes waive this fee if the use is for a television programme/community exhibition/gallery display for a credit to "Key to the City Guides". This doesn't include commercially produced books. Please contact us below with full details of what you would like us to do, plus whether you are ordering our services or offering a credit in return for them.

You feature us on your site, can we update our listing?

Normally this would be Yes - if you are already listed on our site we are happy to update your details. We have paused updates for 2023 and can only remove listings at the present time.

We have a free listings update period at the start of each year, but a charge may be payable outside of this time for listing updates due to the additional time it takes. Please visit our Advertising Section for further details.

I'm a business and would like to advertise or be listed on your websites.

Please visit our Advertising and Listing sections for more details. We do not publish sponsored articles for gambling sites or those businesses we feel mislead our users, such as adding a charge for a government service.

Can you tell me more about the old postcards that you feature on your site?

We try to put as much information as we can about each postcard on our gallery listings but due to limited resources we are unable to respond to individual requests for further information.

Can you answer questions or send out information about the cities you feature?

Unfortunately we don't have the resources to respond to individual visitor questions about the cities we feature. Please direct your questions to the Tourist Information Centre, details of which can be found in the Day Out section of the relevant city.

Will you list my event?

Whilst suggestions are welcome, we only have the resources to list major events that attract several thousand visitors for free. We are unable to respond to free event listing requests unless we are able to include them on our website.

If you would like a paid for events listing, please visit our Advertising section. In the future we hope to include a local events diary which members will be able to contribute to.

How does your rating system work?

The rating of a business is usually a very subjective matter. The service you get on one day by one particular member of staff can be completely different to someone else on a different day. We want to be as objective as possible and take an overall view of the business.

We are looking at value for money, the quality of what the business is offering, how the business treats their customers, repeated reports of the same problem at a business and how a business deals with complaints. Scores are based on either our own experiences, the views of our partners who work in that particular industry, scores from independent sites that we link to, members feedback through the comments section or an average of several web based scores including Google.
If you think our rating is too low or too high we'd love for you to let us know. Tell us your views, what score you think the business should have and a link to one, preferably more, independent web reviews of the business that justifies this.

We're an organisation that would like to work with you.

We believe in creating partnerships with local, independent businesses and groups. Please visit our Local Partners section for details.

Do you have any jobs going?

Any vacancies will be listed in our Take Part section.

Can I submit an article or photo gallery to your site?

From nightlife articles to gallery submissions, we welcome member contributions that are of the highest standards. More details can be found in our Take Part section.

I've spotted a mistake.

We would appreciate it if you could let us know so that we can correct it. Although we try to keep all our listings up to date, we realise that information changes from time to time.

A business that you list has closed.

Again, we would appreciate it if you could let us know so that we can correct it. Although we try to keep all our listings up to date, we realise that businesses close from time to time.

Can you send me a Key to the City™ map?

We are unable to mail out individual copies of the Key to the City™ maps. In the cities where we produce them, they will be available from the main tourist attractions and popular hotels.

I can't log into my user account.

Our member system is automated and case sensitive. Make sure that you are not using capital instead of lowercase letters, or vice versa. If you still cannot log in, please just create a new account as we are unable to send out individual members details.

Do you have any more postcards in your collection?

Yes, we have in excess of 5,000 postcards on the cities that we feature including Cardiff, Newport, Bristol, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Brighton.
