Museums and Art Galleries: Inner City (University Quarter)
Victoria Gallery & Museum
Ashton Street, Liverpool. L69 3DR • (0151) 794 2348
Enter the Victoria Gallery & Museum for the first time and you'll find a collection of art and curiosities so varied you'll wonder why you've never noticed them before amongst all the Liverpool museums. Witness nightmares in a bottle, a Victorian dental surgery, a fine art collection and an archaeological dig.
Opened in May 2008 by HRH The Princess Royal this Grade II listed building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse has been a central part of University life for over a century. As a celebration of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the building has been carefully renovated and transformed into a public venue for all to enjoy.
With its natural light purposefully kept to an atmospheric minimum to preserve the precious items on display, the Museum is home to some of the more curious objects at the Victoria Gallery & Museum. This includes a selection of dentures from the Dental School collection - which is one of the most important of its kind anywhere in the world and the spine tingling ‘Nightmares in a bottle’.
In stark contrast to the dark and mysterious museum area, the art gallery is bright and modern. Every room has a very distinct theme that becomes apparent as you enter. Here you’ll find the exceptional display of art by 19th century American wildlife artist, John James Audubon. This is the largest collection of his original work outside America and one of the most popular attractions.
